STD Testing Q & A

What is an STD?

Sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs, are diseases caused by infections which are passed from one person to another during sexual contact or intercourse. These infections can frequently occur with no symptoms or may display symptoms months or years after the disease was contracted. Medically, infections are only referred to as diseases when they cause symptoms. This is why STDs are also referred to as sexually transmitted infections, or STIs. However, it’s very common for people to employ the term sexually transmitted diseases even when there are no symptoms of disease present. Many types of STD can be effectively treated however some can cause very serious complications or even be fatal if left untreated.

What Types of STDs are there?

There are several types of sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Unfortunately, they are quite common. More than half of all people in the United States will develop a sexually transmitted infection or disease at least one time in their lives. Types of STDs include:

Chlamydia
Genital Warts
Gonorrhea
Hepatitis B
Herpes
HIV & AIDS
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Molluscum Contagiosum
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Pubic Lice (Crabs)
Scabies
Syphilis
Trichomoniasis

Can These Be Prevented? What Types of Treatments Are There?

The good news is people can protect themselves and each other from contracting STDs. Using safe sex techniques allows a person to dramatically reduce the risk of obtaining a sexually transmitted disease. If you have done anything which puts you at risk of an infection, get tested through our office. This will help you any treatments you may require and possibly stop the spread of the disease.  Frequently, treatments will involve a type of medication, commonly an antibiotic and will need to be prescribed by the Dr. Chowdhury. However, some of these diseases do not have a cure and the only way to avoid symptoms is to prevent contraction of the illness.
